MyHeritage Announces New Comprehensive DNA Ethnicity Analysis

Genealogy author and educator Thomas MacEntee reviews the new MyHeritage DNA Ethnicity Estimate experience - are the results what he expected?

What’s New with the MyHeritage DNA Ethnicity Estimate

According to MyHeritage, “The new analysis, developed by the company’s science team, provides MyHeritage DNA customers with a percentage-based estimate of their ethnic origins covering 42 ethnic regions, many available only on MyHeritage, representing the most comprehensive report of its type available on the market.” This means you can better understand the ethnic breakdown from your DNA test data – one of the most pressing issues right now given the many people who are testing their DNA but can’t understand the data.

So what’s the big deal? MyHeritage, as part of its Founder Populations project, now offers the most ethnic populations than any other major DNA testing company. This project worked with over 5,000 participants from its user base of 90 million, based on their extensive family trees located at MyHeritage. These participants received complimentary DNA test kits to gather data to be used in this database.  “Thanks to this analysis, MyHeritage DNA has become the only mass-market percentage-based DNA test that reveals ethnicities such as Balkan; Baltic; Eskimo & Inuit; Japanese; Kenyan; Sierra Leonean; Somali; four major Jewish groups – Ethiopian, Yemenite, Sephardic from North Africa and Mizrahi from Iran and Iraq; Indigenous Amazonian; Papuan and many others.”

MyHeritage DNA’s Ethnicity Estimate Reveal

MyHeritage has paid close attention to the user experience and understands that confusion over ethnicity data has failed to keep newcomers active in the genealogy community. The captivating “reveal” experience  features “animation and, as of this week, also original music composed by MyHeritage. Each of the 42 ethnicities has a distinctive tune, based on the region’s cultural elements; all tunes seamlessly connect to each other. This makes the report fun to watch and share over social media.”

MyHeritage has provided an excellent overview of these new features with this video (play below or click here):
